Drive for conditions.<\/li><li><strong>Traction Tires Required:<\/strong> all passenger vehicles need approved traction tires. Vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR, including some large pickups, SUVs and RVs, must chain up.<\/li><li><strong>Chains Required:<\/strong> all vehicles need chains except 4WD\/AWD, which must still carry them. Violators face a $500 fine.<\/li><li><strong>Chains Required on All Vehicles:<\/strong> everyone chains up, including 4WD\/AWD.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What counts as a traction tire in Washington?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 1\/8 inch of tread and marked M+S, All Season, or the mountain\/snowflake symbol. Any tire with chains installed counts. Studded tires do <strong>not<\/strong> meet a chain requirement.
