In Washington, call your insurance agency when your teen gets an instruction permit, and add them to your policy no later than the day they get their intermediate license. Some companies want permit drivers listed and some don’t, so ask. Have the license date, the car they’ll drive and their latest grades ready.

What are Washington’s teen license rules?
According to the Washington State Department of Licensing, drivers under 18:
- Must complete a state-approved driver training course
- Hold an instruction permit for at least 6 months, with 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), before getting an intermediate license
- With an intermediate license, can’t carry passengers under 20 (other than immediate family) for the first 6 months, and no more than 3 for the next 6 months
- Can’t drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless a licensed driver 25 or older is with them, with limited exceptions
Passenger and nighttime limits can end after a year of safe driving, and other rules apply until 18. Source: Washington State Department of Licensing, dol.wa.gov. Rules can change, so check the current version before relying on this list.
What should I ask about when adding a teen?
- Good-student discounts. Many companies offer one for a B average or better. Have a report card handy.
- Driver training discounts. Washington already requires driver’s ed for teens under 18, and some companies give a credit for it.
- Which car they’re rated on. Some companies let you choose which vehicle the teen mostly drives. An older, safer car may be rated differently.
- Telematics or safe-driving apps. Some companies offer programs that track driving habits.
- Liability limits. A new driver is a good time to look at your limits and whether umbrella coverage makes sense. We’ll explain the options, and you decide.
Is it a good time to re-shop?
A new driver changes your rate, sometimes a lot, so many Wenatchee Valley families compare companies when a teen gets licensed. As an independent agency we can compare several companies at once.
